Duke Kahanamoku is a legend and known around the world. He was not only a great swimmer and surfer, but he was a pioneer in the prone paddling. Today the technology in paddleboards has changed and new styles such as stand-up paddleboarding has emerged.
For over 10-years, this event annually provides an open-ocean paddling race that finishes at the iconic motherland, Waikiki Beach. The annual celebration perpetuates the legacy of Hawaii’s greatest athlete, Duke Kahanamoku.
With the generous support of Maui Jim, Inc., many supporters and individuals contribute their time and effort to stage the event, including our many all volunteers each year. Preparing for race day is a busy time for this team and their kokua makes it happen. The race features the best athletes from Hawaii and an international field, this includes many world-class champions. We have supported all forms of paddle racing, pioneered inclusion in partnership with Access Surf, and developed this quality event for our paddling community.
The event founder, Carl Kim was inspired with his own experience paddleboard racing and wanted to further support the community by staging an event on the Hawaii-Kai run, a famous paddling course that is shared by all as a test of their ability and endurance. Finishing in Waikiki is a bonus that has not been so since the famous paddle racing that took place decades before. Advances in the equipment technology and the birth of Stand Up paddling were important stimulus.
Focus on the youth was a key objective in the field to support their ability and development into tomorrow’s leaders. Young champions are recognized with a perpetual trophy with their names inscribed for all time.
We work with the best services to make this a high quality and an event that everyone enjoys participating in. As well as the finish, athletes receive awards for their performance, receive custom shirts and logo items. Sponsors give products to athletes. Food and beverages are provided to the athletes as part of their entry. Awards are presented at the conclusion of the event, on the stage in Waikiki. Companies who are long time partners are Alohasurflifesaving-jet skis (lifeguards), Pacificsportevents-the event timers, and several other prominent Hawaii companies.
